Keep it only if you already run Zendesk, with the catch that a solo pays enterprise-shaped prices — about $348 a month at 200 resolutions — for capacity they will not use.

True solo cost — low volume~$123/mo committed — 1 seat, assumption: Suite Team $55/mo billed annually (AI agents require Suite) + 45 extra resolutions beyond 5 included × $1.50 committed = $122.50/mo for ~50 resolved conversations; $145/mo pay-as-you-go
True solo cost — typical volume~$348/mo committed — 1 seat, assumption: Suite Team $55/mo billed annually + 195 extra resolutions beyond 5 included × $1.50 committed = $347.50/mo for ~200 resolved conversations; $445/mo pay-as-you-go, before any Copilot add-on

What Zendesk AI Agents is — in our words

Zendesk is the long-established helpdesk for email, messaging, live chat, phone and social support, and its AI agents now sit inside every Suite and Support plan. They answer across those channels, drawing on your Zendesk knowledge base and connected content, using generative responses, intelligent triage and multi-step action flows built with its Action Builder and APIs. In principle this is one of the most capable agents here: it can reason through a request, follow a business process, call an external system for account or order data, and complete the job or escalate with classification and context already attached for a human. The agent-assist Copilot, sold separately, drafts replies, suggests next steps and summarises for your team. For a solo founder, though, the product's centre of gravity is a support organisation, not a person. Admin concepts, plan tiers, add-ons and a resolution meter that only gives you five to ten included resolutions per agent each month all assume volume and staff you do not have, and the interesting capabilities cluster on Suite Professional at $115 per agent or in the quote-only Enterprise tier. Nothing here is broken — it is simply oversized and overpriced for a shop resolving two hundred conversations, and setup is a project rather than an afternoon. Keep it if you are already on Zendesk; do not adopt Zendesk for its AI as a solo.

What it does end-to-end

  • Answers across email, messaging, chat, phone and social from your Zendesk knowledge base
  • Runs multi-step procedures with Action Builder and API integrations into external systems
  • Triages, classifies and routes every ticket automatically for humans who follow up
  • Offers Copilot drafting, summaries and next-step suggestions as an agent add-on

What it does NOT do

  • Fit a solo budget — Suite seats plus per-resolution charges plus Copilot stack to the highest total here
  • Set up in an hour — it is an admin project with plans, roles and workflows to configure
  • Publish a simple all-in AI price — resolution packs and add-ons obscure the real total

Integrations we verified: Shopify, Salesforce, Slack, HubSpot, Stripe, Jira, NetSuite, Zapier

Pros — our take

  • Deep, mature helpdesk with every channel a growing business could eventually need
  • Capable agentic procedures and integrations beyond simple question answering
  • Huge app marketplace and a platform partners and hires already know

Cons — our take

  • Highest True Solo Cost in this list at 200 resolutions, before Copilot
  • Only 5 included AI resolutions per agent on Suite Team makes the meter bite immediately
  • Complexity, admin overhead and quote-only Enterprise tier are built for teams, not founders alone

Other answer customers agents

Easiest first AI agent for a solo shop — learns your help pages and answers chat and email in minutes

The best starting point for most solo shops, with the catch that you pay for the inbox and the AI as two separate products.

True solo cost (typical)~$189/mo — 1 operator, assumption: Growth at $49.17/mo billed annually + Lyro 200-conversation quota at ~$140/mo monthly billing (~$0.70/conversation at that tier) = ~$189/mo for ~200 resolved conversations

Email-first shared inbox with a simple $0.75 AI agent for founders who live in email

Ideal if email is your main channel, with the catch that it answers questions rather than doing ecommerce jobs for you.

True solo cost (typical)~$175/mo — 1 seat, assumption: Standard $25/mo billed annually + 200 resolutions × $0.75 = $175/mo for ~200 resolved conversations

One flat workspace price for chat, email and social — AI credits included, no per-seat shock

The most budget-predictable option if you adopt its inbox, with the catch that the useful AI starts at $95, not $45.

True solo cost (typical)~$95/mo — 1 workspace, assumption: Essentials at $95/mo is needed for ~200 resolved conversations (Mini's ~90 allowance is too small); Essentials includes ~450, so 200 fits flat with no extra seat cost
